Skip old RSS items when setting up feeds

This is a live demo. You can view this page on your account, too.

Hey folks! Quick quality-of-life improvement for those of you using RSS feeds to power your newsletters.

Ever futz with your RSS feed and then watch in horror as Buttondown (or any other feed reader) suddenly necromances an old post from 2024? (Yeah, me too..)

Starting today, you can tell Buttondown to automatically skip any items that are older than a day when they're first discovered. (We already skip old items when they're discovered in the feed as you're initially connecting it, but this new toggle lets you skip them when you're changing the feed too!)

You'll find this new "Skip old items" toggle in your RSS feed settings, right under the behavior options. Just flip it on, and Buttondown will politely ignore any posts with publish dates from the past (give or take a day for time zone shenanigans).

This is especially handy if you're:

  • Moving from another RSS-to-email service
  • Setting up automation for an existing blog
  • Testing out RSS feeds without worrying about old content

As always, if you have any questions or run into any issues, let us know!
